on pre 1972 Mopar products, on the driver’s side only, the lugs are LEFTY TIGHTY —- RIGHTY LOOSEY. The reason is lost to time.

Kinja'd!!!

I actually knew this and forgot (First weekend on this side of the car) The studs are marked with a letter ‘L’ and a lot of the survivors have had the studs change to normal ones. I got out the duggadugga wrench, and I would have r esorted to the “fuck your car” cheater pipe on a breaker bar had I not remembered. (rally wheels havenice chrome nuts that hide the ‘L’. Does anyone know why?

Save this information for when the olds die off and leave a glut of cheap, over restored Mopars. A lso, Put the nuts on the studs ,  not on the floor or you will lose those left handed nuts and you’re gonna have a bad time.

Wheel rotation will tend to tighten lug nuts on both sides of the car.  Although thinking about it, it seems like the passenger side should be reverse threaded.

You did better than this guy under “Repair Mistakes”:

I heard some modern Ferraris use classic Mopar lug nuts :p

That’s what I’d been told, but I thought it was found out not to be true. (or not true enough to keep doing it.

I got more excited by “re-man hybrid battery packs by Doorman”

interesting, or is it left handed thread centre locks?

I tried searching for those battery packs on their site - couldn’t find them.

Glad I have a 73, I never had to remember that.  The theory was that the tires rotating would default to tightening the nuts instead of loosening, but that turned out to almost never be a problem.

yeah, it seems like the passenger side should be reverse threaded, not the driver side if tire rotation were to keep the nuts on.

If that’s the real reason, I suspect that consumer annoyance outweighed the engineer’s desires.

If you have a single nut providing drive torque , like a knock-off on a splined hub (or an RC car) the torque on the one side will tend to try and turn the nut clockwise over time , whereas on the other it will try to turn it counterclockwise. With multi-lug wheels it pretty much won’t matter which is probably why they stopped doing it.

I don’t need one yet, I just trust my Ford dealer as far as I can spit.

Porsche and Ferrari use left hand threaded center locks on the driver side. It's so that under heavy braking forces the inertia in the nuts will want to tighten them further instead of possibly loosening.

They told Mrs Doorhandle that her brakes looked a little dry, and they’d be happy to take care of it for some money.

Old Jeeps did this too. I had a 62 Willys that was the same way which made it cost a couple hundred extra bucks to get home.

I was flat towing it home and the guy had neglected to mention that he was short a few lug nuts on the drivers side. Before I hooked up there was a mix of stripped studs and left hand thread studs with only two nuts on the 5 stud hub. I had driven 120 miles, it was cheap and I wanted it so I risked it. About 20 miles away from the guy I pulled into a Casey’s general store to refuel and the front drivers hub broke.

This was noticed by me so I tried to tighten what was there and it pulled back straightish so I figured I’d risk it as I had about 100 miles left to home. Wouldn’t make it above 15 mph so back to the store to call a tow truck.

Cost me nearly $300 to get it back home on a flatbed tow truck.  That was the beginning of a very costly journey with that CJ6 which I finally sold the end of last year as even after thousands of dollars put into it, it needed thousands more and I had lost the heart to keep at it.

Having owned a couple older Mopars, I can tell you that some of the young tire store employees have not encountered left hand lug nut. I had nuts damaged, a broken stud and wheels damaged, all at the same shop in one visit. I switched that car over to all rh studs and nuts after the damage was done.

That being said, most centerlock wheels are left and right handed. In racing, the nuts are often color coded for left and right. Also, the air impact guns are also left and right hand:

The Model T had reverse-threaded lug nuts on one side, but Ford switched to all forward threads so that they would only have to issue one lug wrench with the new cars.

?? But you can use the same lug wrench regardless of whether the nut is regular or reverse threaded.
